Mark your calendars, art lovers! On November 5th, Urban Artistry brings the incredible documentary Pixadores to Cultplex Cinema, Manchester. Directed by Finnish-Iranian filmmaker Amir Arsames Escandari, this 93-minute film is in Portuguese with English subtitles and takes you straight into the daring world of São Paulo’s pixação.
The documentary follows four friends – Djan, William, Biscoito, and Ricardo – as they navigate life in São Paulo’s favelas. Facing poverty, violence, and social neglect, they turn to pixação, covering bridges, rooftops, and skyscrapers with their bold, monochrome tags. It’s a raw, visual expression of identity, defiance, and survival.
But Pixadores isn’t just about graffiti. When the crew is invited to the Berlin Biennale, their underground art collides with the institutional art world, raising questions about authenticity, activism, and belonging. Escandari’s empathetic direction captures both the risk and humanity at the heart of this movement, making every frame resonate.
Event Highlights:
Before and after the screening, DJ-DS will spin sets blending graffiti-inspired hip hop with Brazilian rhythms, celebrating the energy and spirit of pixação.
